Just in time for Veteran’s Day, U.S. Department of Defense Representative Darrell Johnson visited Burke’s Outlet for the signing of a declaration of support for the National Guard and Reserve.

Store Manager Debbie Lowe and Mayor Deborah Cochran were on hand for the Tuesday afternoon ceremony in which Lowe signed the declaration that promises to employ members of the National Guard and Reserve after they return from serving in the military.

Johnson said across the United States there were 650 ceremonies going on at Burke’s and Bealls Outlet stores in 16 states.

“The corporation is making a statement and that statement is that they support the men and women who volunteer to defend the freedom — the freedom’s that allow us to come and shop as we like, the freedom to go to church where we want to, the freedoms that allow us to live in the country that we live in,” said Johnson.

Cochran met with store employees and thanked the shoppers who stopped to witness the ceremony.

“I’m extremely proud to have Burke’s Outlet in Mount Airy and even prouder to know that they support the troops,” said Cochran.

Lowe said that people tend to forget that members of the National Guard and Reservists are volunteers and she was proud for her store to honor them in this way.
