The Surry Arts Council is introducing a new visual arts program for Surry County’s budding young artists called The Young at Art Club.

The Surry Arts Council’s youth club will meet once a month to explore a new theme and topic each month to keep the arts alive in our community.

Club leader Kayla Ellis has been an arts educator for over 15 years and is a National Board Certified Teacher. She currently teaches art in the Surry County school system. Ellis hopes that the SACs Young at Art Club will grow to include service projects for the Surry Arts Council and community efforts while providing opportunities for all young artists in the community to explore their inner artist.

At the November Young at Art Club meeting, students will explore how art imitates nature. Students will be introduced to the contours and textures of objects from nature and learn to draw from observation to create a November Nature Drawing.

Novembers Nature Drawing class will be held on Friday from 4 to 5 p.m. in the lower level classroom at the Andy Griffith Playhouse. All materials will be provided.

The Young at Art Club is free to join for Surry Arts Council members, or $10 for non-members to attend all Art Club meetings. Call the Surry Arts Council to sign up at 786-7998 or e-mail arts@surryarts.org.

The remaining Youth Art Club meetings are Ginger Cookie House Workshop on Dec. 3, and Christmas Origami Creatures on Dec. 10. Programs will incorporate painting, bookmaking, sketchbook making, tie dye, and other artforms. Meetings for 2011 will be held on January 21, February 25, March 25, and April 29.
