East Surry (2-3) beat Starmount to split its match and send the home team to an 0-2 start to the season.
In its first match, Surry Central actually had more losses than Starmount, but won on points 42-31. The Eagles had one forfeit win and six pins, which count as six points each, while the Rams had to settle for three decision wins and one major decision win that counted for fewer points.
“They matched up really well with us,” said Coach Stephen Priddy. It was the effort of his kids not to give in even when they were behind on points individually that lifted the team to a win. Wrestling can seem like a solo sport, but this shows the impact a wrestler can have even in a loss.
Kevin Pack lost a decision to Marco Fuentes at 112 lbs, but Priddy said Pack performed really well. He said Jared Johnson also showed well in a decision loss.
Later in the day, Johnson would be in the opening match against East Surry and won, pinning Cody Bryant, whom Priddy called one of the Cardinals’ better wrestlers.
“Jared is a tough kid, works really hard,” said Priddy. “He’s good at not letting a bad showing roll over to next match.”
Like the Starmount match, the Eagles did a good job of not getting pinned by the Cards. Three of their five losses were by decision, but none of their victories went to a scorecard, leading to a dominant 51-21 score.
The coach said he was impressed with how well Carlos Pena looked. A state-qualified wrestler at 130 lbs., Pena, now at 140, seems to be fully recovered from the sprained ankle he had two weeks ago. He pinned both opponents.
Jared Dimmette, 160 lbs. and fresh off his time on the football squad, lost his first two matches of the year, but pinned both of his opponents in less than two minutes each to improve to 4-2.
Heavyweight Wes Brown, ranked fifth in the state, also pinned both of his adversaries. As did Johnny Glass at 152 lbs. and Jacob Longworth at 125 lbs.
Sophomore Mason Snow won by forfeit against Starmount, then went the distance against Dillon Slate for a 13-6 decision.
Mason has had a couple of quick pins this season, so it was good for him to have a long match to test his focus and drive, the coach said.
Several area teams will take part in the Blackhaw Invitational Tournament at West Wilkes High School Saturday.
