Mount Airy’s Jordan Hiatt gets a fast-break layup with her left hand ahead of Surry Central’s Cassidy Joyner (2) during Tuesday’s game. The Bears pulled away in the second half for a 59-29 win.
Mount Airy used a tight defense to slow down Surry Central and turn a close game into a blowout, 59-29.

The Lady Bears went up 8-2 at the start of the game, but the Lady Eagles came back with aggressive drives to the basket from Courtney Hegler, Maddie White and Cassidy Joyner. They cut the lead to 15-12 seconds into the second quarter. Sara Bruce had a chance to cut the lead to one with a pair of free throws with 6:49 in the half. She missed both, and Jordan Hiatt responded with a three to give Mount Airy a six-point lead.

A defensive lapse left Danielle Williams wide open at the top of the key, and the Bear drained a three before the halftime buzzer for a 25-15 lead. The Eagles missed nine of 12 free throws, including the front end of a one-and-one.

Jennifer Coe made a basket to start the third, but the Eagles wouldn’t make another shot the rest of the quarter. The eight-point lead spread to 21 points by the end of the quarter as five different Bears made at least one basket.

Back-to-back baskets by the Eagles to start the fourth cut the lead to 40-23. The Bears would pull away, outscoring the visiting team 19-6 the rest of the way, punctuated by Summer Hamilton’s two three-pointers.

The Eagles continued to struggle from the free-throw line and finished 7-24.

This evening, the Bears travel to East Surry, while the Eagles host Elkin.
