Wii Wednesdays have sign-ups to play beginning at 3:30 p.m. each Wednesday. In order to play the Wii games, players will have to have a library card in good standing.

Game Night continues on Thursday nights, beginning at 6 p.m. The library provides cards and board games for those who would like to play. New players are always welcome!

Every Thursday night is Pajama Story Time for children aged pre-K through third grade. Kids may come dressed in their pj’s and bring their favorite cuddle toys. We’ll tell bedtime stories, do some relaxing exercises, and talk about what they’d like to dream about that night. Free!

Book Chats is an informal book club that meets every fourth Monday at 1 p.m. We gather to discuss books that everyone is currently reading. These discussions are open to the public, and are free of charge. This month’s meeting is Jan. 24, followed by Feb. 28 and March 28. Join us!

The Picture Books Book Club book for January is “Shutter Island” by Dennis Lehane. We will gather to watch the movie on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 6 p.m. Copies of the book are available at the library at the front desk, stop by to get a copy, the book club is always open to new members. Each month we read a book that was adapted into a movie, then we gather to watch the movie, and we discuss the differences between the two. We always pop popcorn, and you are welcome to bring a soda with you for a snack during the movie. Call Angela with any questions, 789-5108. The movie for February is “P.S. I Love You” by Cecelia Ahern, on Feb. 15.

The Winston-Salem Urban League offers basic computer classes for seniors here at our library. The Digital Inclusion Project offers one hour of class time from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays each week. The program is designed to get seniors, age 55 or older, online! Every Tuesday afternoon in January, at 3:30 p.m., the library will be having a Young Actors workshop. The class is open to youths and teens, and is free. Those who attend are encouraged to bring their imagination and creativity with them to class. Come join the fun!

On Monday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m., the library will have a Journal Making workshop, led by Lynn Norton of the White Sulphur Springs Extension and Community Association. Free!

Tuesday, Jan. 11, at noon, we begin our three-part series of “Meet the Author” programs in recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Our first program will be local author Tom Perry, and he will be discussing the life and history of J.E.B. Stuart. Part 2 of the series will take place in February.

The library will be closed Monday, Jan. 17, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

We are having a Creative Writing workshop on Tuesday, Jan. 18, for middle-school aged students and older. The workshop will be led by SCC instructor Sarah Wright. Participants should arrive at 6 p.m., with paper and pencil in hand. Free!

Beginning Monday, Jan. 24, the library is holding a Valentine’s trivia contest. Contestants will be given a page of questions about literary couples, and the entrants with the most correct answers will be entered into a drawing for a gift certificate from Trio Restaurant. The winning entry will be drawn on Monday, Feb. 14. Good luck!

Every Thursday afternoon in February, the library will be having Science Thursdays. These classes will be held in conjunction with the Surry Cooperative Extension Office, and the program is available to students in grades K-third, and is free! We will begin each class at 3:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Feb. 1, the library has the Imagine That! Storytellers leading a storytelling workshop at 6:30 p.m. The group will both tell stories, and have a feedback session for any storyteller who wants it. Participation in the class is free, and open to the public. The group will continue to meet on the first Tuesday of each month at the same time.

The Northwestern Regional Library system will hold the annual High School Quiz Bowl on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 10 a.m., at the Andy Griffith Playhouse. Come out to support your school!

Our Meet the Author series that focuses on the 150th anniversary of the Civil War continues on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at noon, with the author of “ Stoneman’s Raid, 1865,” Chris Hartley. The discussion is open to the public, and is free of charge.

On Friday, Feb. 11, at 3:30 p.m., we will have a Valentine craft class for pre-schoolers through elementary grade students. The class is free.

The library celebrates Black History Month on Thursday, Feb. 17, at 6:30 p.m. with a performance at the library by the Bright Star Theatre about the Underground Railroad. The program is made possible through a subgrant from the NC Arts Council. The performance is open to the public, and is free.

On Monday, Feb. 21, the library hosts a Home and Garden workshop, led by Carmen Long of NC Cooperative Extension, where she will be discussing healthy snacks. The workshop begins at 1 p.m., and is free to the public.

The library will hold a Creative Writing Workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 22, at 6 p.m. Bring your imagination, and paper and pencil, to class. The workshop is open to middle-school aged students through adults, and is free.

The Imagine That! Storytellers will meet at the library at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1. Any who are interested in storytelling are invited to attend, and tell stories, or listen. The workshop is free, and open to the public.

Grab a Hat, and Read With the Cat! The library celebrates the birthday of Dr. Seuss during Read Across America Day, on Wednesday, March 2. We will be reading stories by Dr. Seuss throughout the morning, beginning at 9 a.m., and ending with a birthday party at 11:30 a.m.

The library is asking teens to bring photos to the library anytime on Friday, March 4, that they would like to display to the public. We will put them up for display in the young adult section of the library throughout the next week, March 7 through March 12. Please post your contact information on the back of the photo, so we may call you for pickup after the show.

On Monday, March 7, we will be having a photo workshop for teens. We’ll discuss photo taking techniques, and uses of programs, or technology, to manipulate the images. The workshop is free.

Our “Meet the Author” series that focuses on the 150th anniversary of the Civil War continues on March 8, at noon, with author Clint Johnson, who has written a number of books about the Civil War, including “In the Footsteps of Robert E. Lee.” The discussion is open to the public and is free.

Auditions for the Dewey Decimal Players Spring play, “Tales From the Hundred Acre Woods,” will take place on Tuesday, March 8, at 3:30 p.m. Auditionees should be between the ages of 13-18. Contact Angela for more details, 789-5108.

The Picture Books book club title for March is “ The Lovely Bones,” by Alice Sebold. Books will be available at the desk in the weeks before the movie is shown on Tuesday, March 15, at 6 p.m. The book club is always open to new members.

On Monday, March 21, at 1 p.m., the library has Terry Garwood here for our Home and Garden series. Terry will be discussing a gardening topic with us. The discussion is open to the public, and is free.

There will be a Creative Writing Workshop held on Tuesday, March 22, at 6 p.m., for middle-school aged students and older. Participants should bring paper and pencil with them to the class. The workshop is free.

Go Fly a Kite day will take place on Friday, March 25, at 3:30 p.m. We will gather to make kites, and fly them afterwards on the library lawn.

Pre-school Story Hours happen weekly. Library assistant Jenny Wright leads the Wednesday story times, with the 2 year olds at 9:30 a.m., and the 3 year olds at 10:30 a.m. Assistant Librarian Tommie Smith leads the 4- and 5-year-olds at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays. These events are free, and open to the public.
