PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry edged Surry Central 1-0 in a defensive struggle on the soccer field.

East’s defense limited Central’s looks at the goal, and keeper Jacquelyn Holshouser stopped every shot for the shutout.

The Lady Eagles had eight or nine shots on goal, but Jacquelyn saved them relatively easily because of the tough defense played on the attackers, said East Coach Bill Hart.

Central’s defense was just as good, limiting the Lady Cardinals to just five shots on goal. Nichole Bedsaul scored a goal in 62nd minute off a pass from a teammate.

“This is a big win for our program,” said Hart. This is just the third season that East Surry has fielded a girls soccer team, he noted.

“I’m measuring our program against established programs like Central’s,” he said. “I have all the respect in the world for Coach Matt Richardson and his program.”

While he praised all his girls for their effort, Hart said, “Krista Elliott is a senior who anchored the defense tonight.”
