MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Martha Lucille Shelton Gillespie, 92, of 146 Southview St., Mount Airy, passed away Sunday morning, April 17, 2011, at Central Continuing Care. Mrs. Gillespie was born July 8, 1918, in Surry County, daughter of the late James and Hallie Shelton. She retired from Lynn Hosiery. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Ruby and Jack Balan of Pilot Mountain; grandchildren, Joyce and Brad Jessup, Pam Chaney and fiancée, Steve Pike, Jimmy and Suzanne Cooke and Jerry and Janet Cooke, all of Mount Airy; 11 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Brownie Nester and Eva Hylton, both of Mount Airy; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gillespie was preceded in death by her husband, Gilmer Gillespie; her first husband, Ralph Joyce; a son-in-law, Max Gray Cooke; a grandchild, Gary Cooke; three sisters, Estelle Slate, Vestie Fleming, and Barbara Anderson; and brothers, Orange, Sammy, James and Vaxter Shelton. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 21, 2011, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Randall Money. Burial will follow in Midkiff Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of the service at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Central Continuing Care for the loving care they gave to Mrs. Gillespie.
