DOBSON — Surry Central didn’t allow a goal in two games this week, but finished with one win and one tie.
The soccer team finishes the season with five straight road games, so Tuesday’s game with North Surry was its Senior Night.
Honored were Patricia Antunez, Raquel Carbajal, Margerita Cortez, Ilse Lopez and Jennifer Urquiza.
The Lady Eagles then went up 2-0 in the first half against the Lady Greyhounds and won 3-0.
In the 12th minute, Sophie Williams scored off an assist Lopez.
In the 24th minute, Haylee Harrison scored with an assist from the keeper. Chandler Musson made a long punt down the center of the field that allowed Harrison to get past the wall of defenders and have a one-on-one with the Hounds’ keeper.
Eight minutes into the second half, Maddie White scored the Eagles’ last goal.
“We did what we had to do to win,” said Central Coach Matt Richardson. “The seniors really stepped up and had a great night.”
Of his five seniors, the coach said, “It’s been a pleasure coaching all five of them. They work hard and give it everything they’ve got.”
The team has several freshmen, he noted, and the seniors had to adjust to playing with faces. They showed great leadership in practice and in games, he said.
On Wednesday, the squad traveled to Starmount and found a team playing much better than its 3-9 record.
The teams played to a tie in both halves and two 10-minute overtimes, a total of 100 minutes.
“As far as the level of play, we played some of our best – if not the best – soccer of the year,” the coach said. The Eagles controlled the ball and strung together some beautiful passes, he said.
“We got the ball wherever we wanted to, except the back of the net,” he said.
Time of possession was greatly in the Eagles’ favor as were shots on goal, which Richardson guessed was about 25 to five.
Putting together 100 minutes of quality play is something the team can build on for the rest of the season, he said.
The Eagles don’t play again until next Wednesday, with four more road games to go before the playoffs begin May 11.
