On Saturday, June 25, the first-ever International Fiesta Day will offer a free day of entertainment and food in an effort to bring more awareness about the cultural diversity of Mount Airy. The event will be held at Veteran’s Park from 2 to 7:30 p.m.
Event organizers Demetrious and Nazrel Bell have lined up area restaurants and individuals to provide food from around the world. They also have planned to have music, dancing and games to celebrate international cultures. They are still looking for tents to use for the event.
The event will be free with donations accepted and several area restaurants will be serving up free samples of their cuisine.
“People can’t believe we are offering free food,” said Demetrious Bell. She added that is possible because of the help for the event sponsors and area restaurants.
So far, they have lined up Lugo Fonda to provide traditional Mexican food; Trio for French food; Chile Rojo will provide American-Mexican; Coppola’s for Italian food; Asian House will provide Chinese food; Thailand Cafe will bring Thai food; Marvin Nancy will bring American fare; Renee Taborn will be cooking up traditional African-American dishes; and Preeti Patel will be serving East Indian cuisine.
Mayor Deborah Cochran will make a presentation at the event and make remarks at the opening.
Jessica Icenhour, tourism director for the Greater Mount Airy Chamber of Commerce, will be in charge of the door prizes.
Bell said she wanted to organize the event to help expose everyone to different cultures.
“We just want everyone to come out and bring their children and have a good time. Just come out and enjoy yourself and leave your troubles behind,” said Bell.
