About 70 girls are taking part in Mount Airy’s basketball camp this week.

Bears Coach Howard Mayo and members of his varsity and JV teams are leading the four-day camp that concludes tomorrow.

The camp focuses on fundamentals like passing, shooting, rebounding, dribbling, agility drills, defensive drills and offensive moves. It also mixes in general fitness, team play and fun games.

At the end of each day, Mayo presents three awards: the camper of the day, who does the best overall; the hustle award, which goes to the player giving the most effort; and the station award, which goes to the girl that does well in the individual stations.

• Open spots still remain for the Bears’ boys basketball camp under Coach Kevin Spainhour.

The four-day camp starts Monday and runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for rising third-graders through rising freshmen.

“The eighth annual camp offers great instruction while motivating and building character through basketball,” Spainhour said. “Players will participate in fundamental stations, skill contests, camp records and league games.”

The cost is $110. Brochures can be printed at www.eteamz.com/mahsboysbasketball or contact Spainhour at (336) 971-7684.

Players will need to bring their own lunches with drinks available for purchase.

• Also on tap next week is East Surry’s girls basketball camp. Coach Keith Gunter will lead the four-day camp from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

The cost to attend is $50 for the week or $15 per day for girls in grades one through eight.

“Campers will have the opportunity to learn basic concepts of the game and fundamental skills,” said Gunter. “Girls will be grouped by size, age and skill level to maximize their own instruction.”

For more information, contact the coach at gunterk@surry.k12.nc.us or (336) 407-8259.
