MOUNT AIRY — Mrs. Verlie Dean Hiatt Sheppard, 78, of 346 Holly Ave., Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday evening, Aug. 16, 2011, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. Mrs. Sheppard was born March 15, 1933, in Carroll County, Va., the daughter of the late Ephriam Alfred and Lula McCloud Hiatt. Verlie retired from Spencer’s Inc. after many years of service. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, William Thomas “Tommy” Sheppard of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Michael Ayers of Mount Airy; a sister, Stella Hiatt Ayers of Greensboro; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Sheppard was preceded in death by four sisters, Hallie Hiatt Easter, Hassie Hiatt Chandler, Viola Hiatt Doss and Ossie Hiatt Mobley; and two brothers, Carlie Hiatt and Odell Hiatt. The funeral service will be held Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with the Rev. Randy Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
