PILOT MOUNTAIN — East Surry jumped out to a big lead, then battled Mount Airy to the end for a 3-0 volleyball win Tuesday.

The Lady Bears came out slow at the start as East’s Lindsay Marinan served the Lady Cardinals to a 20-0 lead.

Bears Coach Kim Lyons called timeouts at 7-0 and 12-0, but the Bears couldn’t score until East Surry gave them a free point on a foot fault. In fact, two of the first three Mount Airy points came on foot faults.

When the second put Mount Airy down 22-3, Alexis Allen gave the Bears six straight points on her serve before the Cards finished off the first game 25-9.

The Bears started off the second game with a 7-4 lead that had East Coach Caleb Gilley calling his first timeout.

Mount Airy grew the lead to 11-4 before East came back, getting seven of the next eight points for a 12-11 game.

The Bears increased the lead to 14-12 before East scored five of the next six points to take a 17-15 lead, prompting Lyons to call a timeout.

The two teams went back and forth a point at a time to 19-18 before the Cards got three straight for a 22-18 lead and a second timeout from Lyons.

At 23-19, the two teams put on the best point of the match with a long rally featuring several nice saves by both sides. Despite taking the point, Mount Airy couldn’t capitalize on the momentum. East took the second set 25-20.

The third game was another back-and-forth affair with neither team getting more than a three-point lead until East went up 19-13. Mount Airy came back with five straight points to make it a one-point game, forcing Gilley to call a timeout.

Mount Airy tied the game at 19-all, then again at 20 and 21 before East took the last four points for the 25-21 win.

“We came out looking pretty good, I thought,” said Gilley.

As part of her hot start, East’s Marinan finished with 10 service aces along with four kills and seven digs.

Keri Fulp led the Cards with 11 kills and four blocks. Setter Olivia Sheets had 18 assists.

Libero Madison Jessup and Evelyn Wells finished with nine digs apiece, while Katelyn Markle added seven digs.

East Surry is at home again today against Winston-Salem Prep. Mount Airy travels to undefeated North Surry on Thursday.
