The Lady Greyhounds jumped out to an early lead and held ground for a 57-39 win over East Surry Tuesday night.
A basket by Morgan Bunker put North Surry up 8-1 at the start, and the Hounds led 19-6 after one.
After an East Surry foul shot at the start of the second, North scored three field goals and two free throws for an 8-0 run to go up by 20 points at 27-7.
The Cards got two points closer, but then Morgan Midkiff hit a three-pointer just before the buzzer for a 34-13 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, East’s small forward Gabi Jessup ran off seven straight points to bring the Cards back from 26 points down to 19. However, her counterpart, Bunker, scored twice in a row to boost the lead to 43-20. The Cards would get no closer than 16 in the fourth quarter.
East Surry’s Keri Fulp played with an injured left wrist that seemed to affect her rebounding as much as her shooting touch. Fulp went 3-4 from the line in the first half, but 0-3 in the second half. She finished with nine points.
North’s leading scorer, Kristina Rumplasch, also was held down Tuesday. She came in averaging 16 points a game, but had just five as Jacquelyn Holshouser and Fulp patrolled the lane. Rumplasch finished with five points.
The small forwards stepped up for both teams. Jessup had 17 points, including three three-pointers. Bunker, despite early foul trouble, also had 17 points.
North’s Malaya Johnson had 13 points and several rejections. She blocked the first shot attempt of the first half and the first try in the second half.
Midkiff added 12 for the Hounds, including two three-pointers. Bailey Culler had six and Maddison Hawks four.
Sydney Mosley scored eight off the bench for the Cards, Jessica Barker and Laken Bowman two each, and Lauren Thompson one.
East Surry dropped to 7-5, 2-5 in the Northwest Conference. North Surry improved to 15-0, 8-0 in the conference.
The Hounds host Starmount today and have Friday off. The Cards host East Wilkes today (originally scheduled for Jan. 4) and travel to Mount Airy on Friday.
