PILOT MOUNTAIN — The East Surry High School coed cheerleading team is holding a fundraiser at the high school Friday to prepare for a trip to Florida.

The Cardinals will hold a spaghetti supper in the school cafeteria from 5 to 7:30 p.m. while the JV boys and varsity girls are playing Surry Central.

For $7, the meal includes spaghetti, bread, salad, dessert and tea/water, according to Bryan Hall, East’s cheer coach. Participants can dine in the cafeteria or purchase carry-out plates.

The proceeds will go toward the cost of attending the 2012 UCA High School Nationals in Orlando next month.

In the past two competitions, the Cards have finished 11th and 12th respectively in the small-school coed division. This year’s competition is Feb. 11-12.

“Coed cheerleading is challenging in the fact of teaching guys who have never cheered before a challenging routine,” said cheerleader Kelsey Wilson.

“It takes a lot of dedication, and it’s definitely a nerve-wracking experience,” the junior said. “But, in a stadium filled with about 4,000 people and two and a half minutes to hit your routine, that’s to be expected.

“In the end it’s very rewarding, and it’s an amazing memory. We’ve worked very hard this year, and I’m so excited to see how far we can go.”
