• Randy Dean Stewart Jr. of Willis Road reported the theft of a cell phone Sunday, according to Mount Airy Police Department records. Stewart said the Sprint LG phone, purple in color and valued at $200, had been taken by a known individual. The case was still under investigation at last report.

• Wiley Lynfield Goad, 43, of 350 Cherokee Trail, is facing an attempted larceny violation, according to a report from Tuesday when police encountered Goad in connection with a warrant on that offense which had been filed on Nov. 20 by a Surry County Sheriff’s Office member. He is free on a written promise to appear in Surry District Court on Feb. 14.

• Christopher Wayne Smith, 29, of 636 Maple St., was charged Saturday with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Smith was encountered by police during a domestic situation at his home, with a brief investigation revealing that he was illegally in possession of a 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun. Smith was held in the Surry County Jail under a $2,500 secured bond on the felony offense and is to be in District Court on March 6.

•Nicholas Cody Hull, 21, of 102 Lakeview Drive, was cited for larceny on Jan. 26 at Kmart, where he allegedly took various CDs valued at $46. Hull’s District Court appearance is set for March 6.

• Betty Jo Underhill Johnson, 47, of 1102 Bryant Road in Ararat, was charged with possession of a controlled substance on jail premises on Jan. 25. Johnson originally had been arrested on a larceny offense at Walmart, and upon arriving at the county detention center was found to have two alprazolam pills. An initial secured bond of $2,500 set for the larceny case was increased to $7,500 with the additional violation. Johnson is scheduled to be in Surry District Court Monday.

• James Roland Jones Jr., 49, of 1220 Banley St., was cited for larceny on Jan. 25 in connection with a shoplifting incident at Walmart, where he allegedly concealed barbecued chicken. Jones is slated for a March 6 court appearance.
