Greensboro — Surry Central and North Surry were well represented Thursday night in the opening round of the 2A State Wrestling tournament. A total of 11 wrestlers represented the two schools in the event with all those that won advancing to the quarter finals today and the remainder will compete in consolation matches.
Surry Central’s Nathan Bautista (106) was pinned by Lankford from North Henderson. Eagle Kevin Pack (113) lost by a 10-0 decision to Cody Lankford, also from North Henderson. North Surry’s Austin McMillian (113) pinned Lance Johnson of Chase in ten seconds. Greyhound Tristan Brannock pinned Dustin McCraw from Croatoan in three minutes and thiry-four seconds.
North Surry’s Austin Collins (135 pinned Samuel Griffin from Randleman in 49 seconds and teammate Levi Slate (170) lost a 9-5 decision to Tyler Hicks of Wheatmore. Greyhound Logan Younger (182) pinned Ethan Mathias from Clinton in thirty-six seconds. North Surry’s Austin Riggs (195) was pinned by Julian Faulkner of Lewisburg in two minutes and thirty seconds.
Golden Eagle Bryant White (195) pinned John Suggs from Topsill in five minutes and 59 seconds and North Surry’s Zack Creed pinned Tywone Bohn in three minutes to advance. Surry Central athlete Wes Brown (220) pinned Elija Harris of Corinth in three minutes.
Previously in regional competition Eagles White and Brown took first place in their classes and Greyhounds McMillian, Collins and Younger also took firsts in the 2A tournament in Monroe to advance to this competition. The action Thursday night leaves North Surry in second place in the overall team score, one point shy of first and Surry Central is tied for 13th place out of 59 schools in the tournament.
