North Surry won its first golf match of the season by seven strokes Monday. Seen are, front row, from left, Cole Glasco, Taylor Mundy, Corbin Soots, Noah Lyons and assistant coach McCormick; back row, T.J. Ramey, August Cooke, Jed Whitaker, Taylor Coalson and Coach Daniel Johnson.
North Surry took first place and Mount Airy second in a four-team golf match Monday.
The Greyhounds shot a 160 to finish seven strokes ahead of the Bears at Cross Creek Country Club. West Stokes and Forbush were several shots behind for third and fourth places respectively.
Taylor Coalson, the returning 2A state champion, was named medalist after shooting a tournament-low 36 on nine holes.
Mount Airy’s Bailey Bouma was second, just a shot back at 37, while North freshman Noah Lyons was third with a 39.
North Coach Daniel Johnson knew coming into the season what he had with a returning player like Coalson, but this was a chance to see his younger players perform.
Johnson said Lyons shot a 53 in a round last week, which might have been due to nerves because in a practice round at Cross Creek a few days ago, Lyons shot a 42.
This was the first scheduled round for the Hounds, while the Bears had two matches last week when the weather was considerably colder. The first Northwest Conference event is March 28.
