MOUNT AIRY — Ms. Virginia Cowles Smith Faw, 85, of 502 Woodberry Lane, Mount Airy, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 16, 2012, at her home. Ms. Faw was born July 24, 1926, in Richmond, Va., to the late George Herbert and Virginia Cowles Smith. She was a graduate of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was a longtime volunteer with Surry County Health Department and Northern Hospital of Surry County. Ms. Faw was of the Episcopalian faith. She is survived by her former husband and close friend, Thomas M. “Buck” Faw of Mount Airy; a daughter, Catherine Faw Lewis of Westwood, Kan.; a son, the Rev. Thomas McLean Faw Jr. and his wife, Denise, of Matthews; four grandsons, Chris Lewis of Kansas City, Kan., Luke Faw (Kelle) of Indian Trail, Benjamin Faw of San Francisco, Calif., and Matthew Faw (Alissa) of Matthews; and a great-grandson, Carter Lewis of Kansas City, Kan. A visitation will be held Tuesday, March 20, 2012, from 10 a.m. to noon at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. A private service will be held for the family.
