Submissions to the community calendar need to be in writing and arrive or be brought into The Mount Airy News office before 5 p.m. at at least seven days before the event should appear in the newspaper. The calendar runs each Sunday. Be sure to include the full name and address of the event; the time, day and date of the event; and a contact phone number in case our staff has any questions. • Meetings will be held each Thursday at Bojangles from 6 to 8 p.m. for those healing from a broken marriage.

• Jam sessions will be held every Friday from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Willis Gap Community Center. Jammers of all skill levels are invited to attend. Enjoy a night of fun, food, friends and fellowship while hearing bluegrass, old-time, country and gospel music. Admission is free.

• The Wings of Glory Christian Bikers Ministry will meet the first Friday night of each month at the Lantern in Dobson at 6 p.m. For more information, call Tommy Freeman at 648-1566.

• The Mount Airy Public Library will have “Wii Wednesdays” beginning at 3:30 p.m. each Wednesday. In order to play, players will have to have a library card in good standing. Thursday nights are “Game Night” at the library starting at 6 p.m.

• The Surry Arts Council presents clogging workshops and classes taught by Samantha Wilhelmi. These clogging lessons are perfect for all ages and dance abilities, from beginner to advanced. Workshops will be held before the monthly Old-Time Dances in the Old-Time Music Hall, below the Andy Griffith Museum in Mount Airy, 218 Rockford St., from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The workshop is free with the purchase of a dance ticket. The dance starts at 7 p.m. and admission is $5. Popular old-time dance band The Slate Mountain Ramblers will provide the music for the dance. The Old-Time Dance and Clogging Workshop are held on the first Saturday of every month. Also, Wilhelmi is teaching clogging classes every Thursday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Surry Arts Council dance room. This class is perfect for all beginners as well as more advanced students, and all ages are welcome. The cost of the class is $25 a month. • The Surry Arts Council presents The Andy Griffith Museum. The museum is adjacent to the Andy Griffith Playhouse, 218 Rockford St., Mount Airy. Eng and Chang Bunker, the world famous pair of conjoined twins, lived most of their lives and raised their families in Mount Airy. Dozens of Bunker descendants still reside in the area. The Surry Arts Council operates an exhibit on the renowned Siamese Twins. The collection is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Admission is a minimum donation of $3 per person. • Copeland Seniors meet the second Wednesday of each month at the Copeland Ruritan Building, across from Copeland School, at 10:30 a.m. followed by a covered-dish meal.

• Pilot Mountain VFW and Ladies Auxiliary members meet the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the VFW Post Home on N.C. 268. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. and is followed by finger food.

• The Photography Club meets on the third Tuesday of every month. Each meeting will have a brief presentation, addressing areas in which the group members have expressed an interest. Following the discussion, there will be an opportunity for questions on the presentation or other topics. There also will be time to show photographs. • Mother’s Community Connection is for parents with concerns in education, discipline and family fun. Learn about nutrition, healthy living, raising a family on a budget and more. • The N.A.A.C.P. meets every third Sunday of the month at Spencer Funeral Home.

• The Dan River Farmers Market, Dan River Park, Ararat, Va., will be held every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

• The House of Recovery Faith and Hope will have a community feeding every Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m.

• Join the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History at 10 a.m. for the first Friday of every month in fun and fantasy. Explore history and nature through books, activities and more. This program is free and is intended for preschool-age children.

• The Plaid Cloth Literary Society meets every second Wednesday of the month at noon to share the love of reading in the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History on the second floor in the library. Light refreshments are served. Call the museum at 786-4478 for more information.

• VFW Post 2019 will meet the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at Veterans Park.

• American Legion Post 123 will have bingo on Thursdays at Veterans Memorial Park. Doors open at 5 p.m. Early bird games start at 6 p.m. The grill will be open and will have hamburgers, hot dogs, snacks and drinks for sale.

• Dobson Rescue Squad Bingo will be held every Saturday. Doors will open at 5 p.m. Early bingo will begin at 6 p.m. with regular packs at 7 p.m. Concessions will be available. All proceeds benefit the rescue squad to assist in daily operations.

• The Uptown Gallery Group and Art Studio School will host Creative Mondays and Fridays, an informal working group for new and established artists. Those interested should bring an art project to work on, supplies and a refreshment. Sessions will be held Mondays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the studio school on West Pine Street. • GriefShare is a bi-weekly support group for people grieving the death of someone. Learn valuable information that will help. The program is held at Calvary Baptist Church, 416 S. • The Lambsburg Community Center will host a GED classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings with Sandra Sharp. All students are eligible to attend no matter where they live. • The 2012 Twelve Oaks Alzheimer’s Support Group calendar has been released. The group meets the second Wednesday of each month from 4 to 5 p.m. for the public. Dates are May 9, June 13, July 11, Aug. 8, Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec. 12.

• The American Legion Riders of the American Legion Post 123 of Mount Airy are selling tickets for an Old Henry 22 Lever Action rifle, octagon barrel, Golden Boy. Tickets are $1 each or 12 for $10. Funds will benefit children with catastrophic diseases. Ticketholders do not need to be present to win. For more information, call Doc at 401-818-0021. The rifle will be given away July 28.

• The Dobson Community Library, 113 S. Crutchfield St., has storytime each Wednesday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. They read a book, do a craft, color, sing and dance and have fun while learning. Those attending should feel free to stay longer and play with the toys and children’s computer.

April 20

• The Mount Airy Elks Lodge is hosting an endless pasta buffet, salad bar and dessert from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the lodge’s dining room. Call the lodge at 786-2061 or Shannon Sutphin at 325-0339 for details or to make reservations.

April 21

• A big country breakfast will be held from 7:30 to 10 a.m. at the Copeland Ruritan Building sponsored by the Ruritans. Menu includes country ham, sausage, gravy, biscuits, apples, eggs and grits. Cost is donations only.

• The Pilot Knob Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual tractor and truck pull at 1467 Mitchell Road, Pilot Mountain. Gates open at 10 a.m. and the show begins at noon. There also will be a kiddy tractor pull using a scaled-down pedal tractor. Admission is $5, or six canned food items per person, and kids age 12 and younger admitted free with paying adult. • A Thirty-One bingo will be held at the Cana Community Center/Webb Center with doors opening at 5 p.m. and games at 6:30 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Angels on Earth Ranch in an effort to purchase land in Surry County for the mentally and physically challenged.

• The Francisco Ladies’ Auxiliary is hosting a Feeding Francisco Bingo at the community building, 7100 N.C. 89 West, Westfield, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and games beginning at 7 p.m. Cost is a $20 donation which includes 20 games (three cards per game) and four door prize tickets. Prizes are food-related items. A coverall will be held at a cost of $3 for one card, or two cards for $5. Door prizes will be given after each game. Hot dogs, drinks and desserts will be available for purchase.

• Mountain Park Elementary School is hosting its annual Thirty-One/Longaberger Basket bingo fundraiser in the school cafeteria with doors opening at 5 p.m. and game at 6 p.m. Pizza, snacks and drinks will be available.

• The Dobson Community Library will host a free storytelling from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the Dobson Spring Folly.

• The Historic Mount Airy Ghost Tours will begin May 25 and run through Oct. 27 on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. for a new season of 90-minute, lantern-lit walking tours through Mount Airy’s streets and its history past. Stories of 13 of the area’s “less-mortal” friends and some of Mount Airy’s “final” resting places will be featured. Tours begin and end at Old North State Winery, 308 N. Main St. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a camera and umbrella, if needed. Prepaid reservations through the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History.

April 23

• A meeting of the Carroll County School Board has been scheduled for 5 p.m. in the conference room on the third floor of the Carroll County Governmental Complex. The purpose of the meeting is to consider approval of the Carroll County Public Schools 2012-13 operational budget, construction budget, food service budget and textbook budget along with personnel matters. • The Dobson Community Library will host a free showing of “The Tale of Despereaux” with doors opening at 9:45 a.m. and movie starting at 10 a.m.

May 5

• The Susan G. Komen NC Triad Race for the Cure will be held at Salem Academy and College at 8:30 a.m. Register, form a team and fundraise at www.komennctriad.org or call 336-721-0037. This benefits 11 counties including Surry. Last year, the funding provided $40,000 to Northern Hospital of Surry County for mammograms, and in the past, Surry Health and Nutrition Center has received more than $300,000 for breast cancer screenings.

• The second annual Canaanland Children’s Home Thirty-One Bingo will be in the North Surry High School cafeteria with doors opening at 4:30 p.m. and the first game at 6 p.m. Coverall game prize will be a 42-inch TV. There will be door prizes. Cost is $20 a book with three cards per game plus a coverall card and five door prize tickets. There will be two bonus games. Refreshments for purchase include hot dogs, groundsteak, pizza, nachos and cheese and desserts.

May 10

• The regularly scheduled May meeting of the Carroll County School Board has been moved to May 10 in the auditorium of Carroll County High School. May 12

• The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History will host “History Talks: How the Confederacy Funded the War” at 2 p.m. featuring Gary Cook, a long-time collector and amateur historian of the Confederate monetary system and banking in the Old South. Part of his collection of Confederate money and bonds will be on display. This is a free event.

• Muevelo - Latin Dance Party will be from 7 to 11:59 p.m. in the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History Annex, 144 W. Oak St. Doors open at 7 p.m., dance lessons start at 8 p.m. (no partner is necessary), and it is an open dance floor from 9 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $5 at the door with those attending required to be 18-years-old or older. IDs will be checked at the door. A cash bar will be available from Round Peak Vineyards. Refreshments from Miss Angel’s Heavenly Pies will be sold as well. Dress can be casual, but classy, no T-shirts or caps.

May 19
