The Lady Greyhounds won their eighth-straight softball game with a slaughter of North Forsyth Monday.
North Surry won 17-1 in four innings after posting 12 runs in its last at-bat.
In the past three games, the Hounds have ended each contest with the “slaughter rule” by a combined 37-1 total. They beat Reagan 10-0, then Bishop McGuinness 15-0 before this contest.
Of today’s game, Coach Willie Hodges said, “We started slow and then got hot all of the sudden.”
After a scoreless first inning, the Hounds got one in the bottom of the second off an error.
With a runner on second, Hanna Fulk hit a swinging bunt and was safe at first to put runners on the corners with two outs. Marlee Bunker hit a grounder to the shortstop that was fielded cleanly, but on the exchange to the throwing hand, the fielder dropped the ball to allow a run.
In the bottom of the third, Bailey Culler and Molly Martin walked, then Hannah Goins beat out an infield single to load the bases for Cacey Beamer.
Beamer hit a long fly down the rightfield line that the defender couldn’t reach. The ball rolled all the way to the corner as the three baserunners came around to score and Beamer finished at third for a 4-0 lead.
The next batter grounded out as Beamer raced home for a 5-0 score.
In the top of the fourth, Fulk walked one, then a batter hit a grounder up the middle that Culler just missed with a diving attempt. The next batter hit a routine grounder, but the throw was wide, allowing one unearned run to score for a 5-1 lead.
The Hounds more than made up for that run in the bottom half of the fourth.
Fulk singled to center, then Culler walked. A double steal put both in scoring position for Taylor Hill.
The freshman grounded to third, but Fulk had a good jump, so the fielder threw to first as a run scored. Martin walked to load the bases for Goins.
Goins singled to center for two RBIs and then she and Martin advanced a base on the throw home, putting runners at second and third. The score was 8-1 at this point.
A ground out got Martin home, then a player reached on an error to put runners at the corners.
Madison Vernon doubled to center to score Hill and put runners at second and third with a 10-1 lead.
Fulk was up again and grounded to third, but the first baseman dropped the throw as Hill scored.
Marlee Bunker hit a fly to center, but that was dropped, too, for a two-run error to make it 13-1.
Culler singled to left, then Tessa Allen doubled home Culler and Bunker for a 15-1 edge.
Martin walked before Goins hit a two-run double to leftcenter to end the game early. Goins had three hits and four RBIs in the short game.
On Wednesday, the Hounds host Reagan for Senior Night.
