DANBURY — Local athletes set three new conference track records this week at the Northwest Conference meet at North Stokes.

Mount Airy broke two conference marks, while North Surry broke one.

The Lady Bears’ 4x800m relay team ran a time of 12:18, which was the best since the Northwest Conference was created. It also beats the best time in the state for 1A schools by 2 seconds.

The Bears’ Joktan Moore won both the long jump (21-11.5) and triple jump (45-08.5). His two distances were the best in the state for 1A, and his triple jump set a new conference mark.

For the Greyhounds, Marc McKeithen won the shot put with a conference record of 48-01.

Also, Winston-Salem Prep set a record in the girls 4x200 meter relay.

North Stokes won the girls team competition and finished second for the boys. West Stokes took the top spot on the boys side.

Mount Airy finished third for girls, fourth for boys, the best showing of the four local schools.

East Surry was fifth for boys, eighth for girls. North Surry was seventh for girls and ninth for boys. Surry Central was seventh for boys and ninth for girls.

“The whole team did really well,” said Mount Airy track coach Clarence Cropps. The Bears posted nine first-place finishes, led by Kirsten Parries with two solo wins and two relay wins. Moore and Jordan Hiatt had three each.

“I always tell them that if you work hard, it shows. It’s starting to show now,” he said. The coach always tries to get the squad to peak at the right time, he said, and it is good news when they perform a little better than expected.

Parries and Hiatt teamed with Alex Mayes and Davi Barbour to win the 4x400 and 4x800 events.

Hiatt then took first in the 800m and tied for the second-best height in the high jump.

Parries, the state cross country champion last fall, won both the 1,600 meter and the 3,200 meter.

Moore set records in the long jump and triple jump, but he also took first place in the 300 meter hurdles.

One surprise is that teammate Corey Valentine took second in the triple jump in his first time competing in the category.

Valentine was second by just 2 inches in high jump, fourth in the 400 meter and seventh in the 200 meter.

“Corey is unlimited in what he can do,” said Cropps. He is an athlete who can compete in many events.

The other first place came from discus thrower Parley Gentry, who has been the conference leader all season.

The distance necessary to qualify for the regional playoffs is 125 feet, and Gentry bested that with 133-08, only about 2 1/2 feet shy of the conference record.

Surry Central’s Chance Beck was second with a throw of 126-05, so he qualified as well.

“Chance has been focused and really set on hitting that automatic qualifying mark of 125 feet,” said Central Coach Jason Bryant. Beck also finished in the top 20 for shot put (18th).

“Wes Brown was All-Conference in the shot put,” noted Bryant. He finished second with a personal record 45-08 and made the qualifying mark for regionals.

Brown, a standout in football and wrestling, also finished second in the 100 meter, sixth in the 200 meter and eighth in the discus.

Bryant singled out one young man who didn’t win any event, but deserved praise for his hard work.

“Raymund Salazar has undoubtedly been our stand-out athlete throughout the year,” said Bryant. “He has been motivated, willing to work and wanting to see the team be better. Raymund had at least one personal best at every meet throughout the season.”

He finished fifth in the shot put, 11th in discus and 21st in the 100m, all with personal bests. Bryant noted that his discus throw of 112-07 placed him on the school’s all-time list for the event.

For the girls, Megan Gillespie took fourth in pole vault after undergoing ACL surgery for a tear suffered during tennis season last fall.

Unfortunately for teammate Raven Stanley, the two-time 2A champion in pole vault didn’t clear any height this meet.

North Surry sophomore Alex Cooke just missed a conference title in shot put. Her throw of 33-10 was just 2 1/4 inches behind Allison Tilley, North Stokes. Teammate Kendra McKeithen was fourth.

In the discus, Kendra McKeithen was second and Cooke was third. Cooke also finished eighth in triple jump and 11th in long jump.

For the boys, Marc McKeithen was first in the shot put and seventh in discus.

For East Surry, Lamar Shuff took two first place titles in sprints and was part of the 4x100 team that finished second.

Shuff won the 100 meter by more than three-tenths of a second. He won the 200 meter by a quarter-second despite slowing at the end and raising his arms in victory.

Teammate Jaleia Hargrave won a few regular-season meets in both 100 meter and 200 meter as well. However, at the conference meet she finished fourth and sixth respectively, while teammate Destiny Edmonds was sixth and seventh.

Asked what impressed them overall, Coach Cropps and assistant coach Andrew Howard both noted the performance of West Stokes’ boys team, particularly two athletes.

With Matus Kriska and Jacob Fulk both gone to graduation, the Wildcats’ Jason Barber pulled off the triple crown of distance running. He won the 800 meter, 1600 meter and 3200 meter and was second in the 4x800 meter relay in the same day, a total distance of 4 miles.

Teammate Brock Reynolds won the high jump, 400m and was part of the top 4x400 relay team. He also finished second in 200 meter.

The regional 1A meet will be back at North Stokes May 5, while the 2A athletes travel to Cuthbertson High in Waxhaw.
