PILOT MOUNTAIN — The Lady Cardinals beat North Surry 8-1 in softball on Senior Night.

Pitcher Jessica Barker held the Lady Greyhounds to one run in five innings, while going 2-4 at the plate.

Senior Evelyn Wells celebrated her big night by going 2-3 with a single, double and two RBIs.

“We hit the ball really well the first three innings,” said East Coach Derrick Hill. The Cards hit several balls well later in the game, too, but the Hounds made good defensive plays on them.

The Cards scored once in the first, then got some breathing room in the second.

Olivia Sheets walked and stole second. Then with two outs, senior Sarah Scott walked. Wells then hit a two-run double to make the lead 3-0. Brooke Bowman singled Wells home for a 4-0 score.

All three runs came with two outs, Hill pointed out. The Cards have done a good job of scoring runs with two outs this season.

With so much youth on the team, and such green pitchers to start the season, East has needed to take advantage of every opportunity, he said.

And the pitchers have gotten much better over the course of this season: Barker, who started; Cummings, who threw two scoreless innings in relief; and Bowman, who played in centerfield for this game.

The Cards scored three times in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead before North scored its only run in the fourth.

East put one more across in the bottom of the sixth for the final 8-1 margin.

Hanna Fulk went the distance for the Hounds.

East hasn’t always played well on Senior Night, said Hill. He was glad to see the girls come out focused and get an early lead.

East Surry finishes the season 14-7, 11-3 in the Northwest Conference. That ties the Cards with West Stokes for second place behind North Stokes (12-2).

The Northwest Conference Tournament starts Monday. As an upper seed, East Surry will host a first-round game.

Over the past few years, the Cards have gotten accustomed to being the top seed for the Northwest in the state playoffs, but they don’t have that advantage this year, Hill said.

“We will try to win the conference tournament, but our approach will be to try to keep improving” for the playoffs, he said.
