During the Senior Awards Program at North Surry High School on Friday, students were lauded for their efforts over their 13 years of academia.
In addition to Isabella Gillespie being named this year’s valedictorian, students were awarded $2.9 million in scholarships during the program.
Gillespie has earned 4.93 grade-point average (GPA) in her four years of high school while accumulating 55 credit hours of college courses and being enrolled as an online student at the North Carolina School of Math and Science, according to Principal Bill Goins.
She will be attending the Honors College at East Carolina University and has been accepted into the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina, where she will study medicine as soon as she finishes her undergraduate degree.
The salutatorian this year will be Emily Marie Powell. She earned a GPA of 4.730 during her years at North Surry. Powell is a member of the National Honor Society, an honor graduate and a North Carolina Academic Scholar. She will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the fall to major in psychology.
The most outstanding female athlete was Morgan Bunker. Alex Ratcliff received the 2012 Ron King Male Athlete of the Year award.
• The engineer technologies award went to Austin Martin.
• The agricultural award went to Brady Payne.
• The family and consumer science award went to Zee Key.
• The business award went to Hanna Fulk.
• The Health Occupations and HOSA award was given to Joseph Albright.
• Emily Powell was awarded the English award by Susan Edwards.
• Jessica Figuolo was awarded the healthful living award by Travis Gammons.
• The mathematics award went to Emily Powell.
• The science award went to Madison Fields.
• Zee Key was awarded the Family and Consumer Science award by Gail Shelton.
• The principal’s award went to Kara Collins.
The Wendy’s High School Heisman award went to Kyle Moser and Morgan Bunker.
