GREENSBORO — North Surry had two athletes place in the top four at the state 2A track and field meet Friday.
Shot putters Alex Cooke and Marc McKeithen each won their event at the regional meet last week.
Alex had a throw of 37-08.75, good enough to beat all the Western competitors there. However, two Eastern athletes edged her by mere inches. Still, she took third place, earned the team six points and earned herself a bronze medal.
She also finished 12th in the discus with a throw that was even better than her attempts at regional, 88-02.
McKeithen won the regional by 2 feet, but against stiff competition, he still finished fourth with a throw of 49-0.5. He earned a medal and provided the Hounds with five team points. The two performances meant the Hounds were 35th out of 50 teams for both the boys and girls teams.
Surry Central’s two-time state champion pole vaulter finished fifth Friday.
Raven Stanley vaulted 9 feet, which Coach Jason Bryant said is her best of the season.
Stanley has jumped 10 feet before, which would have been good enough for second place, but didn’t clear that height this time.
“I know she was somewhat disappointed,” Bryant said of his senior. “But I told her she was graduating as a two- time state champion and not many people get to say that.”
She was the only Golden Eagle to qualify for the state meet, but her five team points ranked the girls team 38th out of 50 schools.
