MILLERS CREEK — West Wilkes needed extra innings to defeat East Surry’s softball team Wednesday night.
The Lady Blackhawks edged the Cardinals 6-5 to advance to the third round of the 1A state playoffs.
East Surry was unavailable for comment.
West Wilkes (24-4) travels to North Stokes (20-3) in a battle of the top 1A teams from the Northwest and Mountain Valley conferences.
The winner of this game moves on to the regional semifinal against the winner of South Stanly (21-6) and Lincoln Charter (17-2).
East Surry loses four seniors this year, including co-captains Sarah Scott and Evelyn Wells. However, the starting pitchers and the team’s top hitters return next year.
The team’s four all-conference players all return including rising seniors Jessica Barker, Brooke Bowman and Kelsey Wilson as well as rising junior Amber Lawson.
Rising senior Kristen Cummings was an honorable mention, and rising sophomore Olivia Sheets was a starter who hit above .300 for the year.
