The sun shone brightly as the golfers played in the 16th-Annual SCC Foundation Golf Tournament last week at Cross Creek Country Club, hosted by Surry Community College.
This year’s event was dedicated to the memory of Pat Gwyn Woltz, SCC Foundation board member, scholarship donor and patron of education.
The tourney raised more than $65,000 to fund student scholarships awarded annually by the College Foundation. Bobby Harold, H&W Trucking, and Jerry Venable, First Citizens Bank, serve as co-chairmen for the tournament.
This is the 13th year Woltz and Associates Inc., of Roanoke, VA has served as lead sponsor in partnership with First Citizens Bank, W.L.A. Trucking Company Inc. and Pilot-Flying J Travel Centers. James L. Woltz, of Woltz & Associates, was presented with the Champion of Education Award for his commitment to SCC and its students.
Woltz also received a photographic collage which memorialized Pat Woltz, his mother, a stalwart advocate of Surry. Margaret Shepherd, retired instructor from Surry Community College provided the meals for the tournament in memory of her husband, Dr. Carlyle Shepherd, also a former SCC instructor.
Individuals, business and industry from across the region and beyond came together to make the tournament a tremendous success. A complete listing of tournament sponsors is available at www.surry.edu.
Twenty-six teams teed off for the morning round, followed by 31 teams in the afternoon. Players and volunteers enjoyed food, fellowship and the expertise of SCC golf team members who, for a fee, provided powerful drives on the first hole. A drawing yielded winners of a North Myrtle Beach vacation won by Jack Fletcher; four rounds of golf at the Highland Course at Primland won by Jared Moser; and a 42” Sanyo flat-panel TV won by Earl Martin.
Tournament winners will have scholarships awarded in the name of their team for the 2012-2013 school year. Winners included:
