SILOAM — For the first time in its 27-year history, the Fourth of July Celebration in “The Square” in Siloam has been canceled.
“People just can’t come and help. A lot are senior citizens who have called and said they can’t handle being in the heat,” Jerry Venable, president of the sponsoring Copeland Ruritan Club, said Monday morning. “The Copeland Ruritans as a group by phone talked Saturday and decided we would cancel the event.”
With nothing but tents to protect people from the anticipated 95-degree temperatures, Venable said the group “just can’t run the risk.”
“We hate it,” he said.
The group will discuss the possibility of holding some type of community gathering in the fall, but no plans are set in stone.
Venable said for those wanting to celebrate, they can attend the festivities at Ararat or Mount Airy, and that Mountain Park and Shoals events might be cooler since they are in the evenings.
