Six girls basketball teams descended on Mount Airy this week to take part in two days of scrimmages organized by the Lady Bears.
Forbush, Ledford, West Stokes and Wilkes Central from North Carolina were joined by Carroll County and Bassett from Virginia.
Over Thursday and Friday, each team played a game against its six counterparts. The girls played games simultaneously in the high school and old junior high gyms.
Any time a coach can see his team compete against other squads, it’s a valuable experience, according to Coach Howard Mayo. All of the coaches will benefit from evaluating their teams under game conditions, he believed.
Mayo thanked the schools for taking part, noting that some had lengthy bus rides like Ledford (51 miles), Wilkes Central (52) and Bassett (58).
Over its six games, the Bears went 4-2, including a 71-50 romp over Bassett in the finale.
Mount Airy is looking to reload after losing four seniors with a lot of starting experience: player of the year Jordan Hiatt, Danielle Williams, Summer Hamilton and Alexis Allen.
Over those six games, different people stepped up at various times, vying for those leadership roles, Mayo said.
Returning from last year’s team are seniors Dana Brown, Andi Moore and Symone Simmons. The five rising juniors are Alex Atkins, Davi Barbour, Kathryn Beasley, Mikayla Seivers and Jasmine Varney.
While that nails down eight spots, Mayo said he is looking to add to that bunch.
While tryouts will still be necessary to finish out the roster, Mayo brought in two freshmen and two sophomores to see how they reacted to playing against varsity-level competition.
Sophomores Taylor Moore and Halee Ratcliff were joined by incoming freshmen Skyler Flippen and Ayano Shelton.
