The Runnin’ Patriots (29-3) downed the Wake Forest Eagles, 58-29, at Greensboro College to claim the title.
“It feels great,” Surry coach Glenn Edwards said of the win. “This is the first state champion out of the Surry program.”
The Runnin’ Patriots have been in existence for six years.
Saturday’s lopsided result, like the other wins, was a result of teamwork. Suzi Santucci led with a game-high 13 points. Molly Hamilton had 12 points to go with five steals and three assists. Becca Tompkins added four points and seven rebounds. Sally Ann Edwards contributed two points, six rebounds and three assists.
“The team absolutely doesn’t have a superstar,” Edwards said. “It’s that way every night. I’ve got seven girls and all seven have been my leading scorer at some point in the year.”
Friday night’s regional championship game was a bit different. Surry held a 18-point advantage, yet found itself trailing by the third quarter to New Life Camp. Edwards said his team settled and made its free throws down the stretch for the win. The close call was a learning experience and led to a different philosophy Saturday.
“We beat (Wake Forest Eagles) by about 40 the first of the year, but this team improved a lot,” Edwards said. “We kept our press up even though we were up 30. We let a 16-point lead slip away last night. I’m not going to take us out of our game because we’re winning.”
