ARARAT, Va. — A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled today for the Dan River Park Multi-Use Trail in Ararat.

The project will provide a safer access route to and from the neighboring Blue Ridge Elementary School and throughout the entire park.

Citizens of all ages will have use of the park for walking, jogging and cycling, with various elements in place to make it more pedestrian-friendly and inviting, officials say.

Heading today’s groundbreaking ceremony, to be held at 11 a.m., will be Patrick County government officials and Janet Epperson, the president of the Dan River Park Association. Two companies involved with the project, Benchmark Surveying & Design, LLC and J.C. Joyce Trucking & Paving, also will be part of the event.

A transportation enhancement grant from the Virginia Department of Transportation made the trail possible. Phase 1 of the project is slated to start this month.

The public is welcome to attend the groundbreaking ceremony at Dan River Park, located at 619 Raven Rock Road.
