LOWGAP — A fire in Lowgap during the weekend could be arson-related, pending a probe by the State Bureau of Investigation.

The blaze was reported at 604 Tony Holder Road at 4 a.m. Saturday, according to Chris Galyean, chief of the Pine Ridge Volunteer Fire Department.

“I was the first one in,” Galyean said of his arrival at the single-wide mobile home.

“I pretty much knocked it down myself,” the fire chief added of the blaze.

The structure is owned by Joe McMillian but was being rented by a lone female occupant named Yvonne, whose complete identity was not available. Although no injuries resulted, the incident left its mark on the mobile home.

Its master bedroom was destroyed along with the room’s contents. “It pretty much smoked the whole house up,” Galyean said, adding that a lot of heat damage occurred as well. The structure was uninhabitable afterward.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.

“Right now, it’s undetermined,” Galyean said Monday, noting arson as a possible cause and the involvement of the State Bureau of Investigation.

About 15 firefighters were on the scene Saturday, including Pine Ridge personnel and members of the Skull Camp and Franklin volunteer fire departments who assisted.

They remained on the scene about seven hours.

The Surry County Chapter of the American Red Cross provided food and clothing to the fire victim.
