The Granite Bears got back to their winning ways with a narrow 3-2 win over an improving South Stokes team.

Mount Airy started the season with two losses before rattling off nine straight wins, including a 3-2 win over East Surry and a 3-1 win over a good Elkin team.

Then in the last two matches, the Bears lost to West Stokes and Surry Central, which are a combined 12-1 in conference play.

The Sauras came into the match winless, but the record was deceiving.

In the first five games against teams with losing records overall, the Sauras gave up an average of 5.6 goals.

In the past five games against teams with winning records, South Stokes has given up just four goals a game.

After this win, the Bears are now 10-4 and 4-2 in the Northwest Conference.

Mitchell Brown provided two of the goals and assisted on the other one to Cristian Cabrera.

Captain Carlos Carrillo was big on defense with 35 clears, noted Coach Will Hurley. Sam Watson also played really well.

Keeper Alex Mayo had 18 saves.

“Overall, it was a really good team effort,” said Hurley.

Today they travel to North Wilkes (2-9-1 overall) for a nonconference game. Next week, the Bears travel to East Surry.
