To the Mount Airy Police Department for initiating a program locally to help area churches take preventative steps aimed at keeping them from falling victim to criminal acts. This is another in a long line of efforts by the local police department taking proactive steps to make the community safe and foster strong, open relations with the public. The community is fortunate to have such a progressive law enforcement agency in the city.
To the Surry County Board of Commissioners for opting against allowing the invasive Arundo Grass to be grown in the county limits. There is a movement to allow the grass to be cultivated as an ingredient in biofuel production, but this plant has shown itself to be fast-growing and destructive. It was good to see the board have its research in hand when considering this move.
