MOUNT AIRY — Mr. Hugh Carlyle “Bus” Johnson, 89, of Mount Airy, widower of Mrs. Lee H. Johnson, passed away Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012, at the Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home. He was born Dec. 15, 1922, in Surry County to the late James Howard and Thelma Hennis Johnson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. Mr. Johnson attended Flat Rock Presbyterian Church and was retired from Bassett Furniture. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Deenie and Kim Asay, Alpine, Utah, Jill and Steve Shepard, Mount Airy, Judy and Rick Sowers, Cana, Va.; two stepdaughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Mike Collins, King, and Bonnie and Bill Neely, Mount Airy; 13 grandchildren and spouses, Paige Shepard, Abby and Jody Seaver, Richard Sowers and fiancée, Keisha Payne, Amy and Jeremy Keele, Emily and Dan Hillstrom, Rachel and John Durling, Katie and Jeff Dong, John Asay, Joshua and Whitney Asay, Matthew and Sarah Asay and Caleb Asay, Brittany Collins, and Tabatha and Jeff Cox; 20 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Avanelle (Sis) Elder, Mount Airy. Private graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at Skyline Memory Gardens conducted by the Rev. Wilborn Rives. Full military rites were conducted at the graveside by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 Mount Airy and Post 9436 Pilot Mountain. The family received friends at Moody Funeral Home from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday.
