The date is fast approaching where county residents can get rid of some of the more dangerous waste around their homes, according to the Surry County Public Works Department.

The county will be hosting a hazardous waste pick-up from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park in Mount Airy on Oct. 27.

According to Dennis Bledsoe, interim public works director, all containers brought to the pick-up must be labeled, with all lids closed tightly. Any waste brought to the site in glass bottles must be cushioned.

During this year’s Household Hazardous Waste and Pesticide Collection event, the county will take paints, paint stripper, pesticides, weed killers, drain solvents, gasoline, dry cell batteries, oil, acids, thinners, solvents, antifreeze and pool chemicals.

Some of the items that will not be accepted this year include ammunition, radioactive materials, unidentified materials, explosives, medicine and syringes, propane gas or propane gas cylinders, infectious waste or automotive batteries.

Bledsoe emphasized that the pick-up is for household waste only, and that no commercial waste will be accepted.

For more information, call the Surry County Public Works Department at 401-8376.

Sponsors for this year’s pick-up include the county public works department, the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture.
