The votes have been tallied, checked and rechecked and the winner of The Mount Airy News Cutest Pet contest is — Gabbie, a small dog owned by Velvet Gammons.
The pooch, wearing a purple bandanna in her contest photo, received 1,714 votes to take the top prize in the annual contest.
It was a close vote, though, with the photo titled “Can’t do a thing with this fur in this humidity,” showing off a rabbit owned by Becky Campbell taking second place. The rabbit — which wasn’t named in the contest entry — pulled in 1,705 votes.
Both pets, and their owners, live in Mount Airy.
Gabbie earned her owners a $50 prize, which will be sent out shortly. The unnamed rabbit also will be taking home a $50 gift certificate, to be sent shortly to his owners.
Nearly 9,000 votes were cast in the event, sponsored by Lucky Bones Country Club and Animal Medical Services,.
