DOBSON — Surry Central lost another offensive threat, but still had enough firepower to run away from North Stokes 49-15 Friday on Senior Night.
Before the game, the Golden Eagles honored their seniors, including injured running back Wes Brown. Seniors Caleb Mitchell and Jared Dimmette also were in street clothes.
Then just before the half, running back/receiver Reid Stanley ran an end-around play to the right side for a 6-yard gain. On the tackle, he suffered a lower right leg injury and was carted off the field with 47.8 seconds left in the second quarter. His status was not available at press time.
Still, the Eagles had quarterback Colby Chilton, who rushed for 200 yards and four touchdowns.
The defense did its job, too, picking off all-conference quarterback Garrett Wood three times and getting several sacks.
The two teams went nearly the entire first half without a punt.
On the first drive, North Stokes faced third-and-12 at the 24-yard line.
Wood dropped back and threw over the middle. Linebacker J.C. Whitt picked it off around the 30-yard line and raced in for a score just 51 seconds into the game. With a Ranferi Ramirez kick, the Eagles led 7-0.
North Stokes faced another third-and-long on the ensuing possession, but a screen pass to fullback Dillon Rogers resulted in a 37-yard TD just 57 seconds after the Eagles’ score. The Eagles blocked the extra point and led 7-6.
The Eagles picked up one first down, then Chilton faked a pitch to Kenyon Martin and was going to run, but was hit before he could put the ball away. He fumbled at the Eagles’ 43, and the Vikings recovered.
Chilton made up for that play by picking off a third-down pass and returning it to the 45-yard line.
He completed a pass to Stanley for a first down, then rushed for another first down to the 32-yard line.
Runs by Alex Martin and Dakota Dobson earned a third first down, then Martin raced 20 yards for a touchdown.
With 2:25 left in the first quarter, the Eagles led 14-6.
As the first quarter ended, North Stokes was lining up for the first punt of the game. To start the second, however, the Vikings went for it on fourth-and-5. Dobson sacked Wood to force a turnover on downs at the 36-yard line.
On the next play, Chilton sprinted up the center of the field, pulled loose from an illegal horse-collar tackle attempt and ran into the end zone for a 64-yard score. With another Ramirez kick, Central led 21-6 with 11:38 in the half.
Alex Martin nearly recorded the third interception of the first half, but couldn’t pull the ball in.
Then Danley sacked Wood twice to bring out the punter for the first time.
The Eagles roughed the punter, giving North Stokes a first down at its own 40-yard line.
Three straight incompletions brought up fourth down, but the Vikings went for a fake punt and completed a pass to Dustin Smith for a first down. Then a long pass down the right sideline gave the Vikings a first down at the 11-yard line.
Kenyon Martin dropped a potential interception in the end zone, but the defense held the Vikings to a 23-yard field goal for a 21-9 lead.
Stanley ran the kickoff about 30 yards into North Stokes territory, but a penalty brought it back.
After a three-and-out, the first official punt sent the Vikings back to the 39-yard line.
Danley recorded another sack, and Luke Haymore broke up a deep pass to force a punt.
Chilton carried once to the 46-yard line, then faked a pitch to Kenyon Martin and raced 54 yards for another touchdown with 2:06 in the half for a 28-9 lead.
A 15-yard face mask penalty on the kickoff gave the Vikings the ball at the 46-yard line. Wood then moved his team downfield for a 19-yard strike to Smith for a TD.
On the two-point attempt, Wood found Matthew Hopkins in the right corner, but as Hopkins was coming down with the ball, Haymore stripped the ball out for a 28-15 score with 1:12 left in the half.
The Vikings tried a squib kick, but Alex Martin grabbed it and cut back and forth through the field for a 63-yard pickup to the 23-yard line.
After Stanley’s injury, Chilton pitched the ball to Kenyon Martin for a 17-yard touchdown run to make it 35-15.
The Eagles would add two more scores in the second half, but the Vikings couldn’t convert.
Chilton finished with 16 carries for exactly 200 yards. Stanley had three carries for 16 yards and the only completion of the night for nine yards as Chilton attempted just two passes.
Alex Martin had five carries for 88 yards (including a 58-yarder), and Dobson had 14 for 82. Chris Craddock had two carries for 16 yards.
Ramirez was 7-7 on extra-point attempts.
The Golden Eagles (4-5) finish the season on the road, traveling to South Stokes (7-2).
