Lady Golden Eagles defeat Stanly in straight sets to advance in state playoffs

NEW LONDON — Surry Central’s Lady Golden Eagles opened up their first round of the state volleyball playoffs with a solid win over North Stanly in three sets, 25-15, 25-23 and 25-18 in the final set.

“We came out not knowing how to match up to Stanly but they did well,” said Eagle Coach Carrie Hutchens. “We were able to play our A-game and got out and did what we had to do. We had some hard hitting and our offense won for us. We out did them on hit pass sets and hits. Most were doing tips and taps but just did not reach the same level offensively as the Lady Eagles.”

Central ‘s Kendra Johnson led on digs with 17, Courtney Hegler had 11, Cassidy Joyner had four and Kaitlin Kidd had two. Kidd and Joyner led in kills with nine each, Hegler had seven, Brittany Lewis had six and Kelsey Taylor had four. Lewis led in blocking for the Eagle gals with five. Kidd and Tori Blevins each had one block.

Meagan Hutson led Central in assists with 19, Holly Mason had six and Kidd had three. Hutson led in serves hitting on 15 of 17, Joyner went 15 of 18, Kendra Johnson was 8 of 8, Kidd struck pay dirt on 7 of 7, Hegler was 6-for-7, Mason was 5-for-5, Brooke Lewis went 5-for-6 and Kelsey Taylor went 2-for-3.

The Golden Eagles are scheduled to advance to the second rebound at Central Davidson, the top ranked team in their conference. Central finished second in the Northwest Conference.
