LOUISBURG — A Mount Airy golfer took first place on the women’s side of the Louisburg Iron Team Clash at Bull Creek Golf and Country Club in Louisburg.

Surry Community College faced off with Johnston, Louisburg and Sand Hills community colleges over the weekend.

Former Lady Bear Rhiannon Cox was first in her field, while former North Stokes golfer Ryan Wilson was second in the men’s tournament.

The seven female players shot 27 holes over the weekend. Rhiannon shot 91 for 18 holes, then 46 for nine holes for a total of 137, three strokes better than the second-best finish.

Coach Tom Pendergraft said the women use the Modified Stableford format, which assigns a point value to how a player finishes a hole.

For example, a par is zero and a bogey a minus-one. By this scoring system, Cox’s performance was even better. She finished with a -32 score for 27 holes, which was five points better than Sage Evans of Sand Hills.

One golfer from Johnston scored a -63, Pendergraft noted, so the course wasn’t an easy one for the ladies.

The men’s tournament featured 32 players from the four teams. SCC finished third with a 609, just behind Louisburg (605) and Sand Hills (594)

In the first round, Wilson shot a 72 to lead the field by one stroke.

“Ryan is one of the best golfers in our region,” said the coach.

In the second round, Wilson shot a 74, but Louisburg’s Juan Fernandez shot a 69 to nip Wilson by three strokes for the medalist award.

Pendergraft was very pleased with his team’s results, noting that four of the five men scored in the 70s on both days.

Andy Carowan shot 76 and 73. Chris Joyce and Dillon Carter both shot 78 and 79. Matthew Snow shot 89 and 84.
