From a 5K to trick-or-treating, there’s something for everyone to do during Halloween week and the weekends surrounding the holiday this year.

The third annual Vineyard Stomp 5K Run & Wine Walk will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Round Peak Vineyards. The 5K cross-country run will be through the vineyards, with age group awards, to be followed by a vineyard 1K wine walk beginning at 1 p.m., featuring wines from Round Peak, Skull Camp and other Yadkin Valley wineries.

On Sunday, the Ghosts, Goblins & Miss Gertrude event will be held at the Gertrude Smith House from 5 to 7 p.m. Storytellers Brack and Angela Llewellyn will provide the entertainment for the evening. There will be refreshments and there is no admission fee, according to Ann Vaughn, executive director of the Gilmer-Smith Foundation, that is in charge of the upkeep and programming at the Gertrude Smith House.

“Our ghostly storytellers have assured me that they are bringing all new material that is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat. Visitors are encouraged to wear costumes if they like as the staff will all be decked out in their ghoulish costumes,” said Vaughn.

She said Miss Gertrude’s house will have lots of surprises in store that evening.

“We love Halloween. It’s one of our favorite seasons of the year and the house will be decked out for Halloween.”

As far as trick-or-treating goes, parents can bring their kids to downtown Mount Airy on Halloween from 3 to 6 p.m. to trick-or-treat at merchants along Main Street. Belk in Mayberry Mall also will be handing out candy to kids that night.

Also on Halloween night, the Surry Arts Council will be host the Bright Star Touring Theatre that will present “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” at the Earle Theatre at 4 p.m. Costumes are welcome and prizes will be awarded. Parents are asked to leave the kids’ candy in their vehicles.

The Mount Airy Museum of Regional History will have its annual Boo Bash party at Old North State Winery on Saturday at 8 p.m. Admission is $20 per person. There will be a costume contest.

Matt Edwards, executive director of the museum, said the event is always well attended and he is expecting another great crowd this year. He said everyone comes dressed up in their Halloween finest for the party. Evan Olsen and Dana will be performing again this year. Edwards said that even though it’s only two guys playing, it sounds like they are a full band and their performances are always well received.

The museum also is offering its Historic Downtown Ghost Tours on Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m., along with a bonus tour on Halloween at 8 p.m. Tours begin at the Old North State Winery. Tour tickets are $10 each.

The NoneSuch Playmakers will perform the play “Haunted Murder,” written by Brack Llewellyn, at the L.H. Jones Family Resource Center Auditorium on Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be $5 at the door. The group also will be performing at Chateau Morrisette Winery on Nov. 2, 3 and 10. Parents are encouraged to bring their child’s decorated pumpkins to the library anytime between now and Monday to participate in its Jack O’Lantern contest. The pumpkins will be on display all week for voting when visitors come by to check out books or to attend programs. The winner with the most votes will be announced on Monday at the library’s America’s Next Top Monster event at 3:30 p.m.

For those who enjoy all things ghoulish in the celebration of Halloween, A Field of Screams at Fisher River Park, is just the ticket. The haunted trail will be open this Friday and Saturday at dark. There are all new scenes this year. The price is $7 per victim and $20 for VIP tickets which allow visitors to move to the front of the line and go through it as many times as they want for that night.

The haunted trail is an annual fundraiser for the Dobson Rescue Squad.

In addition to being open this Friday and Saturday, the trail will be open on Nov. 2 and 3.
