Voting numbers look good so far

While we still maintain reservations about the wisdom of early voting, at least the numbers show turn-out for this year’s election should be high.

Already nearly 17 percent of the county’s voters have cast a ballot — that’s a higher percentage than the total in some recent elections — and with more early voting locations opening this week that number promises to go up.

The opportunity to cast a vote in a free and open election is a privilege many people in the world will never know, and it’s always dismaying to see people in America, including those right here in Surry County, take such a lazy attitude toward the institution of elections.

At least with a presidential election, it appears the county is well on its way toward seeing a good percentage of voters cast a ballot not only in the race for president, but also in local elections that happen to be on the ballot this year.

That is a good thing. We just wish numbers were this high during every local election.
