County residents needing to get their pets a rabies shot but struggling to come up with the money will get a little help this weekend.

Veterinary clinics from around the county are joining forces Saturday to offer the annual Fall Rabies Clinic, offering rabies shots at the discounted rate of $7.

Gary Brown, director of the Surry County Animal Shelter, said the event is one conducted twice a year.

“We do one in the fall and one in the spring, and are fortunate enough to have all the veterinarians in the county participate,” Brown said.

While each clinic will be conducting the clinic at different times, all rabies shots will be $7 Saturday, according to the animal shelter director.

“All of the county vets will be participating Saturday, but they will be doing it during hours that are convenient to them,” he said. “They’re all private vets, but they participate with the county to conduct the clinics. They’ve been very good to work with and participate in this event.”

Brown said the discounted rates are part of an effort to slow the incidents of rabies in Surry County.

“This clinic is a chance to give the citizens a chance to get their dogs and cats vaccinated,” he said. “This encourages people who work during the week and have a hard time getting to the vet a chance to participate at the discounted rates.

“If their animals or children were to get bit, having a rabies shot can protect both their animals and their families,” Brown added.
