DOBSON — The last Unlocking the Mysteries of Medicare Prescription Drug Plans workshop for seniors reviewing coverage from 2012 to 2013 has been set for today from 10 a.m. to noon at the Pilot Center of Surry Community College.

According to Carmen Long, local coordinator of the North Carolina Department of Insurance Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), most previous participants helped by volunteers have found significant changes in prices and coverage between plans.

She explained local SHIIP volunteers use the Medicare.gov website to help people find the least expensive plans which cover the majority of their medications.

“We (SHIIP) are unbiased and do not promote or sell any insurance products,” explained Long. “It is strictly educational to help people learn about their options. Prescription drug costs often consume a large portion of an individual’s disposable income. It is sad when people have to choose between medicines they need and other basic necessities.”

Long said that participation in the groups other two workshops has been good and hopes that others do not miss this last opportunity for the basic information program.
