CANA, Va. — A Mount Airy woman was airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Health Wednesday afternoon after she ran off the road and into a ravine.

According to Virginia State Police J.D. Delp, Bertha Sheppard, 57, was conscious and talking following the wreck that he said could have been much worse.

The accident happened at about 3:10 p.m. near Little Bear Trail. He said she was driving north on U.S. 52 when she ran off the right side of the road, then overcorrected. She then went off the left side of the road where her car came to a rest about 20 feet down.

Cana Rescue and Fire personnel used the jaws-of-life to free Sheppard from her 1991 Pontiac Trans Am.

Delp said he didn’t suspect any alcohol use. He said the wreck may have been caused by a medical problem.

“Considering the impact, I think she’s doing pretty well,” Delp said.

AirCare landed in a field at St. Paul School.

The accident is still under investigation.
