A Mount Airy couple is behind bars under bond of $1 million each after a five-month-old baby died under suspicious circumstances Friday night.

Sheriff Graham Atkinson said Billie Jo Floyd, 30, of 346 Austin Drive, and Justin Wayne Barker, 32, of 456 Poteat Road, have been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Floyd’s child.

According to the sheriff, county emergency responders were called to Barker’s Poteat Road residence for a report of an infant suffering from cardiac arrest Friday. Officers with the county sheriff’s department were dispatched to the scene at the same time.

“By the time officers arrived, paramedics had left with the child and were administering CPR,” Atkinson said.

The infant girl was pronounced dead at Northern Hospital in Mount Airy.

Atkinson said injuries on the baby’s body “raised concerns,” and after further investigation the decision was made to charge the couple.

An autopsy on the infant is scheduled Monday morning, at which time Atkinson expects a cause of death to be determined.

The sheriff’s office is releasing no additional information at this time.
