Although this area has been relatively dry in recent weeks, Mount Airy’s precipitation total stands well above average for the year, according to a monthly report from F.G. Doggett Water Plant.

It also showed that a high-temperature record for the city was tied last month.

As of the end of October, 53.45 inches had been recorded at the water plant, Mount Airy’s official weather-monitoring facility. That’s nearly 37 percent, or 14.43 inches, above normal for the first 10 months of the year, when this area typically receives 39.02 inches of precipitation.

The surplus has been maintained despite a below-average output last month, when 2.08 inches were measured. October rainfall averages 3.46 inches.

Rainfall occurred on nine of October’s 31 days, with the largest amount — 0.54 inches — logged for Oct. 2.

Mount Airy had nine days with fog last month and one on which frost occurred.

The low temperature for the month occurred on Oct. 22, when 32 degrees was recorded.

On the other end of the scale, the highest reading for the month, 83 degrees noted on Oct. 25, tied a local record for that date which had been set in 2001.
