KERNERSVILLE — Surry Central led most of the way, but Bishop McGuinness finished with a flurry for a 49-43 win Tuesday.

The Golden Eagles led 43-41 after a Colby Chilton put-back, but the Villains scored the last eight points to win the conference opener.

The Eagles opened the game with pretty good ball movement on offense, according to assistant coach Jeff Edmonds. Chilton tallied five points in the first quarter to build a 16-11 lead.

Bishop closed to 25-24 at the break, but Central added one more to the lead over the third period for a 37-35 edge.

Big man Tucker Crews went out of the game with foul trouble, but reserve Isaiah Mateen stepped in and provided 14 points for the Villains.

In the fourth quarter, Chilton had all six points for the Eagles, while Bishop’s Kevin Weckworth scored 10 of his team-high 16 in the fourth. Weckworth drew several fouls and shot 6-9 from the line.

In the second quarter, the Eagles got a little impatient on offense, noted Edmonds. Coach Ken Eiswald preached patience at halftime, and the boys were better in the second half, but the shots just weren’t falling, the assistant said.

Chilton finished with 17 points, but no other Eagle was in double figures. Zach Wilmoth had seven, Brett Mosley five and three others had three points each.

The Eagles travel to East Surry on Friday.
