PILOT MOUNTAIN — Three students preparing for a military career have been lauded for exceptional performance at East Surry High School.
According to Senior Army Instructor for the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) and retired Lt. Col. Richard Howe, some of the school’s best JROTC cadets recently dressed in their uniforms to compete for Cadet of the Quarter.
And this was no empty practice for the cadets, Howe said.
“A board of judges from the East Surry JROTC Battalion Staff inspected each individual cadet and asked a series of questions,” he said. “After answering the questions, the cadets were required to demonstrate their knowledge of drill.”
Cadets in the corps Cadets in Leadership Education Training program who were at level two and above demonstrated their drill technique while armed with mock rifles, while those in level one demonstrated without arms, Howe said.
“The cadets were graded on how well they answered questions, how well they performed drill and how well their uniforms met standards,” he noted.
Only cadets who maintained an “A” average in the JROTC program throughout the semester were allowed to compete for the honor.
Following the competition, the judges tallied the scores for each cadet.
The winners were:
• Level Three — Cadet Dalton Allen.
• Level Two — Cadet Janelly Durr.
• Level One — Cadet Derrick Moore.
Each of these cadets were promoted in rank and received a medal.
All cadets who competed received a ribbon for their uniforms.
