Anyone who might have been planning to attend a meeting of the Mount Airy Board of Commissioners Thursday night is out of luck in that respect — there is no meeting.
Normally, the city council meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month, which would have meant a session being held this week. However, officials have decided to cancel that meeting.
This conforms to a practice of the commissioners in recent years to forgo their second monthly meeting in December due to its proximity to Christmas, which comes Tuesday.
City government deviates from its meeting schedule only two times during the year. The other involves the cancellation of the first-Thursday gathering in July due to Independence Day. That acknowledges the fact the July 4 holiday period is traditionally a vacation time.
The Mount Airy Board of Commissioners will next meet on Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. in the Municipal Building.
