DOBSON — A new program being implemented at the Surry County Register of Deeds office is set to help county residents take care of their property transfers online.

Register of Deeds Carolyn Comer announced last week that a new system is being put in place through a Chapel Hill-based company to offer electronic recording services to filers of land records in her office.

The services are being offered through Courthouse Computer Systems Inc., and Electronic Document Logistics.

“The company has been working with… staff, training and testing the electronic recording processes and procedures for the past three to four months with no flaws, and we’ve successfully e-recorded 14 documents,” Comer said.

Electronic recording is the process of submitting, receiving and processing documents through the Internet. These documents have traditionally been sent to the Register of Deeds office via runner, express mail or snail mail.

But wishing to use the service shouldn’t assume they can just email the documents in and trust it’s being handled.

“Anyone wishing to file their document will have to submit a memorandum of understandings before being allowed to e-record the documents,” Comer said. “This will be a painless step which will make this a more secure process.”

Surry County is accepting cancellations from attorneys and banks before expanding into all filing systems.

For more information about the electronic recording of documents and requirements to be allowed to submit electronically, call the Register of Deeds office at 401-8150 or visit the Register of Deeds website at www.co.surry.nc.us.
